Why is the Gondola closed?

Accepted Answer

The most common reasons for closing the Gondola are strong wind, storms, or thunderstorms. The Gondola is never closed for cost-saving reasons. The crew operating the Gondola are on duty all day, even if the lift does not run for a single minute.

What is the wind limit for the Gondola? How can I check the wind forecast?

Accepted Answer

There is no exact limit, as factors such as wind direction and gustiness strongly affect the situation. As a rough guide, when wind speeds on the fell are around 13–16 m/s, we are right at the operational limits for running the Gondola. Ground-level winds tell you nothing about wind on the fell – for example, 4 m/s in a ground-level forecast is usually well over 10 m/s on the fell. Wind is not forecast specifically for fell areas at all. All forecasts are ground-level wind forecasts, so they only give a rough sense of how wind strength is trending. Wind direction is decisive on the fell: while one side may be nearly calm, the other can have very strong wind.

The Gondola is closed due to wind – could it open during the day?

Accepted Answer

Yes. If conditions improve, the lift may be opened mid-day as well. Maintenance staff check the wind situation at regular intervals and will open the Gondola if conditions allow.

Question 4

Can I bring my dog on the Gondola?

Accepted Answer

Yes, you can. Some cabins show a dog symbol to indicate that you may travel with a dog in that cabin. Please be considerate of people with allergies and only bring your dog in the permitted cabins.

How long is the Gondola ride?

Accepted Answer

A Gondola ride takes about 10 minutes each way. At the top you can get off and stop for coffee at Restaurant Kammi, for example, or take photos at the scenic swing behind Kammi.

How do I use the lifts with my bike?

What is the easiest trail for beginners?

Accepted Answer

For brand-new riders we recommend starting with the trails from the Vekkuli. When your bike feels familiar and you feel confident, you can move on to trails reached by the chairlift, such as Ylläs Flow. Flow is wide and beginner-friendly. Riding at an easy pace, you can manage with everyday cycling skills and a bit of an adventurous spirit.

Are the trails marked by difficulty?

Yes. All trails are clearly marked by difficulty with color codes: green (very easy), blue (easy), red (intermediate), and black (difficult). Read more about trail classifications

When do the trails open?

Accepted Answer

Trails open at the start of the season as soon as conditions allow. Snow melting from the fell can affect when different trails open slightly. The first trails open on 13 June, and the rest usually around Midsummer. You can see which trails are open directly on the trail map on our website. Follow our social channels for news about sudden changes.

Is it allowed to ride the trails outside opening hours?

Riding outside opening hours is prohibited for safety reasons. Maintenance is carried out on the trails outside opening hours. Please note that walking on the trails is strictly prohibited. See opening hours

Question 12

Can children ride the trails too?

Accepted Answer

Yes – children are welcome at the bike park! Young children should always ride with an adult who is skilled at cycling. We recommend starting with the easiest green trails and making sure the child has appropriate protective gear. Our rental shop is happy to help you choose equipment for kids. For safety reasons, you must not carry a child on the bike in any kind of seat, trailer, or front pack.

Why is a trail closed?

A trail may be closed due to maintenance, weather, or safety reasons. Always obey trail closure signs. See the trail map

Do I need a helmet or other protective gear?

Accepted Answer

Yes. Wearing a helmet is mandatory on all trails. We also strongly recommend other protective gear such as knee and elbow pads and a back protector.

How long is a Bike School course?

Accepted Answer

Courses last two to three hours depending on the course. For example, the Get to know the bike park course lasts two hours, and the technique course three hours.

Do I need my own bike for the course?

Accepted Answer

You can take part with your own bike or a rental. When booking, check that your own bike is suitable for the course. If needed, you can rent a bike from HILL rental next to lift ticket sales. Bike and gear rental is not included in the course price.

Is the course suitable for children?

Accepted Answer

Yes. We offer Pyörä-Werneri courses especially for children. Werneri courses are designed for kids and are safe, fun, and educational.

Do I need previous riding experience?

Accepted Answer

No. For example, the Get to know the bike park course is designed for complete beginners, and no prior mountain biking experience is required.
